I couldn’t agree more, it’s a truly Parisian experience if just for the staff. And I love how they take orders by writing selections onto the paper table covering. What a fantastic bistro.

Another aspect of Le Petit Saint Benoit that I thoroughly enjoy is the clientele – 90%
French and of that probably 50% local Parisians. While this could seem intimidating to an English speaking tourist, the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming and the
other patrons are there to enjoy themselves and a fine meal. As long as one doesn’t come across as loud, impatient, or demanding this sweet bistro and those who fill it will provide a charming evening as well as a delicious meal.

La fontaine Medicis was indeed a find. Dozens of trips to Paris over the years and somehow I had never turned the right corner, or taken the right path to come upon this peaceful, shady, lovely spot to sit and rest on a sunny, late afternoon. Makes me wonder what other remarkable spots remain to be discovered on some future trip!

Very well put Jackie. I couldn’t help but think “I’ve seen this before” when I saw the shots of the rooms in particular. And, yes, the Lowell is an excellent example of a truly fine NY hotel. Maybe I’ll do a little write up about the Lowell next! Thanks for the comments!

How sad! In my opinion the new sleek look is available all over NYC. What set the
Surrey apart from all of the run of the mill modern ’boutique’ places to stay was the classy albeit lovingly tired furnishings/decor. This certainly will not be my choice for a visit to the city. Much prefer the upkeep and updating done as necessary by truly classic (and classy) hotels such as the Lowell.
Too bad!

Good point, the original clientele would have been attracted to a more formal, traditional look and the renovations are certainly very streamlined and modern. They had a great staff too, and I hope they kept them on.

What a huge transformation, the Surrey Hotel looks amazing. I like the new look, but I wonder if they’ve managed to keep returning clientele.
